Review of Snow Angels (2007) by Darryl J — 12 Sep 2008
David Gordon Green is becoming something else. I hope he gets his ~indie~ filmmaker tag ripped off because he is a genuinely great director who shouldn't be so pidgeon holed. This is one of the best ensemble casts I've seen in years. There is not one performance in this that is less than stellar. Sam Rockwell was a fucking revalation. I've always liked him but I didn't know he had this in him.
The thing that surprised me most was how perfectly Green establishes all these characters and makes them all so 3 dimensional. He also has this wonderful talent to create a sense of community that never seems artificial. The story is so skillfully told. It's one of the few films that I was genuinely shocked to where it went to. It's hard to explain but I felt like I was right in their world. It all felt so real. Besides the marvelous turn of events in the middle of the story,it also has some of the best relationships between people I've seen. I feel like I'm just going to keep ranting but this was so perfect.
