Beautifully filmed, but emotionally uneven, the film's foreboding melancholy has promise and a few genuinely touching moments, but the whole is incomplete, eliminating much empathy for the lead characters.
Though, that may have been the intent since the director's other films have been more about a general tapestry rather than individually poignant stories.
