Review of Snow Angels (2007) by Sally K — 13 Jan 2009
A vast and expansive emotional exploration, "Snow Angels" falls way short on making any sort of connection between what's going on within the film and what the meaning of it is. There's no doubt that the acting and direction are great, as I've come to expect from David Gordon Green, but the film is lacking a cohesive element to bring it all together.
It's too simple to say the film explores the rise, current state, and the end of loving relationships. He made that movie before in a better fashion in "All the Real Girls." No, "Snow Angels" is about something else, I think.
I know Rockwell's character talks about religion and God a lot. Angels. God. Is there a connection? I couldn't find one. Green knows how to make a great film. I've seen all of his films and I must say this is his weakest.
It's moody ambiance overshadows its simple message and ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. To present the material as "not so simple" and then end it in a "simple" manner is a cop-out and unfair.
I can't say "Snow Angels" is a complete waste of time, but I know I have no need to ever watch it again because it simply didn't do anything for me.
