Review of Sneakers (1992) by Dave C — 15 Sep 2007
I honestly don't believe we give this film the credit is deserves for impact on cinema. It was really the first spy movie without Cold War Russians. It was really the first hacker movie before anyone really knew what the internet was.
With the Cold War suddenly over, they took a punt at what the new source of power was going to be, they said information, and how right they were. What this movie says about the power of controlling information, especially on computers, was a decade ahead of its time.
Besides this, it is a funny, clever and entertaining film which gets your heart racing when it needs to. It also highlights the talents of (in my opinion) one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood in David Strathairn.
This film is also notable for being amoung the last film appearances of River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose the year after it was released.
