Review of Sneakers (1992) by Allan C — 14 Jan 2013
A smart, high-tech update of the Jules Dassin style heist film. The film is greatly aided by a terrific and eclectic cast that includes Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, David Strathairn, Timothy Busfield, Donal Logue, Eddie Jones, Ben Kingsley, Stephen Tobolowsky and James Earl Jones.
Although it's a small part, I'd forgotten how good an actor River Phoenix was. The only thing holding this film back is the somewhat ponderous, over serious baby boomer meditation on their activist youth and their roles in the current world.
But other than that, the film is a lot of fun. And co-writer, director Phil Alden Robinson had three good films in a row, this, "Field of Dreams" and "Sum of All Fears" but inexplicably hasn't made anything of note since then.
I really hope he starts making some more films soon.
