Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Ola K — 13 May 2010
By the time the 90s rolled around, director Brian De Palmaâ??s POV tricks and cutesy Hitchcock steals were more than a little tiredâ??and David Koeppâ??s government conspiracy script is painfully obviousâ??and Nicolas Cageâ??s boisterous corrupt AC Cop routine is so over the top itâ??s in orbitâ?¦but (and itâ??s an unintelligible â??butâ??) I love, love, love Snake Eyes.
Itâ??s slick and itâ??s cool and itâ??s a lotta fun. Cageâ??s wide eyes, screams, loud shirts, and chest hair gets me smiling. And I love Carla Guginoâ??s naïve do-gooder and Stan Shawâ??s punchy fighter and even Tamara Tunieâ??s two scene news reporter.
Yeah, Gary Sinise is boring but heâ??s really the only player guilty of that cinematic sin. Snake Eyes is not high art or original, but it sure keeps this film fan coming back for more. VF.
