Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Nick W — 18 Oct 2007
Compact thriller. Compact setting. Great conspiracy premise. Brutal fights. Blurred morality. Claustraphobic intensity coupled with a relsih of Vegas settings. Stunningly inventive camera angles and direction.
And yet it feels somehow disposable - one would miss little if anything by not seeing it. The trailer summarised and captured the whole film better than the product itself (perhaps because it had the score from 'The Saint' to generate pace and atmosphere).
Interestingly, the baddie (played here by an obvious choice in Gary Sinise) was supposed to be played by Will Smith. Had Smith accepted and played it, then this might just have been a classic 'face off' yet again for Cage and one that would be genuinely unmissable?.
.A great 'what if' of cinema..
