Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Willem W — 28 Apr 2008
I think you have to be a DePalma fan to enjoy this movie. I think it was brilliantly directed, but the story isn't so good. However, the visuals are so arresting, logic doesn't even come into it.
The opening long takes are so well handled you don't even notice them. This is one of those movies that reminds us that in the hands of a great, visionary director, story doesn't matter. What matters is the immediate emotion of the scene you're watching.
Like some of David Lynch's work, this film doesn't tie together, the brilliance doesn't lie in the sum of it's parts, but in scenes that grab you visually and carry you along despite yourself.
