Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Manal S — 30 Apr 2009
REVISIT: I had the pleasure of sitting down and re-watching this film today and I forgot how good it is. Nicolas Cage always intrigues me and here is nothing short of eccentric and over-the-top as Detective Rick Santoro, your typical, shady, into-everything-he-shouldn't-be-but-is cop and it works there flat out. Then you have the always competent Gary Sinise, this time playing a bad guy (I don't think we can label that a spoiler since they let you know half way through the film that he's the bad guy), and rounding off the cast is the beautiful Carla Gugino, who does just fine as the woman stuck int he conspiracy.l.
What I enjoy about this film though, is De Palma's excellent camera work. There are some insanely beautiful head down shots throughout the film that really give this film a different kind of feel. Also the point-of-view shots in the majority of the flashbacks are just plain awesome.
So for what it's worth, give it a shot, especially if you find yourself up at 2 in the morning and TBS is running it, as they pretty much do weekly.
