Review of Snake Eyes (1998) by Allen Y — 05 Apr 2010
I just caught this movie a couple of days ago on cable! And I tot it was brilliant for 1998. And this is despite only watching it for the first time about 12 years later!! I'd say it was a bit ahead of its time the way... Brian De Palma directed this film. It kind of drew a lot of similarities to Vantage Point, with all the flashbacks... & perspective / other ppls point-of-view (POV). Very very surprisingly entertaining.
Nic Cage was his usual self as I some how think that its pretty stereotype for him...however I do like the changing of heart he potrays. The other castings are also more than sufficient to hold strong to what De Palma wants to put together. The soundtrack was composed by Ryuchi Sakamoto which was the name that initially pulled me to watch this movie. However I felt the soundtrack a bit out of place & to over whelming for this sort of murder mystery. Lastly, the beauty of this movie would be the way / cinematography of HOW the story is told & HOW it unfolds.... a true investigative experience, which does not totally depend on the protagonist or antagonist or even the damsels anatomy! The most recent quality in a murder-mystery that i've seen lately wud be - Sherlock Holmes 2009. But that one had a better fitting soundtrack & a HUGE budget :) Snake Eyes - 1998? Pretty darn good!
