Review of Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) by Bily T — 10 Jul 2017
Smurfs: The Lost Village is another disappointing movie from Sony Pictures Animation this year. This movie was meant to be both a reboot and a way to redeem the studio from the two Live Action movies staring the Smurfs, this movie goes back to just being animated with no Live action what so ever also brings in a different voice cast.
The problem I had with DreamWorks' The Boss Baby continues here with this movie from Sony Pictures Animation where they have a celebrity cast making it only computer animated, making it feel cartoony, not having much character development and spoiling every single joke in the trailer and even spoiling the plot twist of the movie. I don't understand why they do this and it's only in their trailers, it's a common problem with animated movies that isn't released by Disney or Pixar but there are some studios that don't do this problem with most of their movies but most of the time it's mainly Disney and Pixar not spoiling some of these moments.
The story was meh, the cast was pretty good, the music was decent, the characters are a mixed bag of being good, okay or just bad characters not giving them much time to give them character development or even some screen time when this movie is mainly centered around Smurfette like the second Live Action movie was.
The one good thing is that at least Sony Pictures Animation stepped up their game with the animation since most of the time it's very cartoony but with this movie it actually works since the characters came from the original cartoon from years ago and I also like that it try's to stays faithful to the original source material.
Even though this movie stays faithful to the original source material the problems I had with the movie make it some what of a bad thing and that is a real shame since I was hoping this movie would redeem the studio and also what they did to the Smurfs as a whole.
If you are a big time fan of the Smurfs you might get some enjoyment out of this movie but if not I think it's best that you simply just don't watch this movie at all or you could just put it on as a destruction for the kids while you do something else while you babysit them.
I give Smurfs: The Lost Village a 3 out of 10 once again another disappointing movie from Sony Pictures Animation but I know now that their next movie will just kill them as a whole since nothing good will come out of it.
