Review of Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) by Bradley J — 11 Jul 2017
Much more of a pleasant kid-friendly palate cleanser than a cinematic torture vehicle like the live-action/animated hybrid Smurf films, Smurfs: The Lost Village, wisely and finally, converts the blue characters into eye-popping animation.
It's a gorgeous looking film, with a solid female-centric core. It could have even gone further with the girl power as it was perfectly laid out to be a feminist reboot of the series. The script still needs some work, as random sex jokes and juvenile humor take away from the childlike innocence found in the rest of the film.
It isn't fantastic animated cinema, but after dreadful previous releases, it comes as a pleasant lark. Rating: 59.
