Review of Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) by Wojciech K — 06 Jul 2017
This movie is so much more MATURE than people give it credit for. What would be a lazy message? "Do your best, never give up". A more mature message for kids would be "You're not defined by your origins, you are what you choose to be". But this movie goes even further. "You ARE defined by your origins - learn from that, use that and you will be unlike anyone else". That's incredibly wise.
It's also a very valuable film in how it retains the sheer INNOCENCE of the Smurfs. I largely forgot it's possible to do an entertaining, engaging story without the "ugly" stuff. In this movie there are no enemies among the Smurfs. They get on each others' nerves with how different they are, sure, but they are all, without exceptions, friends. They love each other - and not in a romantic nor hippie-dippie kinda way, but in a genuine, caring way. And it's so refreshing!
Point is, it's one of my new favorite movies and I'm 25. Is it childish? Maybe, but not in the "only for kids" sense - in the "takes you back to childhood" sense. Not nostalgia-wise, either, it takes you to the "ways" of childhood, if you will.
