Review of Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) by Thaddaeus D — 08 Apr 2017
I'll get around to reviewing the live-action/CG abominations later. Smurfs: The Lost Village is in my opinion a bit crappy. I know they're trying with an animation style that bears similiarites to the Peyo comics and the old cartoon and that Sony made this movie in an attempt to mend the fence which the live-action movies broke.
While I admire its girl power message and it's slight improvement over its predecessors, I never felt truly compelled. The story was predictable, most of the humour made me sigh and the sequences where the Smurfs face a perilous situation had some entertainment value but, to prevent children from crying, you know the Smurfs are going to make it out okay with no serious injuries.
It does focus on the topic of Smurfette's sense of purpose, something which nostalgic adults should find amusing but I find this film to be below average. Also, I'm sorry to say this but even though Gargamel was a bit more energetic and colourful along with Azrael and that bird of his, I find Hank Azaria to be more preferrable over Rainn Wilson.
Go ahead, sue me. It's my opinion. The kiddies will enjoy it but will this the movie I where Sony finally learns that not everything works as a movie, even when they try to mkae it faithful to its source material? *sigh* Think everyone will be tearing The Emoji Movie apart when it comes out in August?
