Review of Smother (2008) by Bethany R — 11 May 2009
Diane Keaton is a riot and I thought she did a superb job of being both an extremely neurotic air-brain and a real person struggling to accept herself and her life at 60 (maybe that's not a completely new character for her but I appreciated this exaggerated new performance).
Dax Shepard may not have been well cast but I think the lines in this movie, paired with Keaton's character, save it from being considered a waste. The dialog soars in this; I had to rewind many times to make sure I didn't miss any lines.
I'm not a Liv Tyler fan but I did like her in this (probably because she wasn't in it a lot). I liked it because though she was overall "sweet" (aka boring) she was also blunt and sarcastic as well.
Mike White's character was totally funny...along with his crazy screenplay and Keaton's apparent interest in it. I think it's refreshing comedy, creative writing, and engaging character relationships.
I'm now eager to see more from both Vince Di Meglio and Tim Rasmussen..
