Review of Smosh: The Movie (2015) by Preston L — 07 Nov 2015

Smosh is a feature film from Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, of the popular Youtube channel Smosh. In the movie they play fictional versions of themselves and have to travel into the inner workings of Youtube to remove and embarassing video Anthony found of himself from their time in high school so that no one will remember it and he can win his high school crushes affections. Once in Youtube they encounter all kinds of obstacles and have to fight their way back to the real world.

Things I Liked:

The Youtube culture. I watch a decent amount of Youtube videos and am familiar with a number of the internet celebrities who have channel on Youtube. So personally I found the cameos and culture to be fun to watch. I understand that this won't resonate with the widest of audiences though.

Things I Didn't Like:

The Comedy. Smosh has never been my favorite of channels. They have occasional laughs but more often I find them to be the humorous equivalent of a 12 year old who only learned all the dirty sounding words in his 7th grade science class. The movie has maybe one or two good laughs in it but after that it gets tiresome and stale very quickly.

The Plot. The plot of this movie is stupid. The twists and turns the movie takes make no sense, and the logic is outright bonkers. The movie tried to bring Smosh's sketch comedy style to the big screen and it did, but it is clear that only works on the 3-7 minute video scale and does not translate to feature lengths.

Overall:

Overall the movie is stupid. The humor is childish, the cast does not have the skill or charisma to carry a movie of this length, the plot is nonsensical and confusing, and the only redeeming thing about it is seeing cameos from people like Jenna Marbles or Markiplier. The movie shows that just because something works on one scale does not mean it translates to another scale.
