Review of Smokin' Aces (2006) by J K — 14 Dec 2009
Writer/Director Joe Carnahan took a lot of notes from Quentin Tarantino, this witty and quirky action flick has a ton of Tarantino's unique style. Smokin Ace's is an exciting crime film with a seemingly simple plot and some truly memorable moments.
This film has some great humorous moments and it also has some intense and incredible shoot-out sequences. The cast is what brings this simple action film to life. Alicia Keys is much better than I expected, Taraji P.
Henson was very funny and odd, Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta were good as the cops. Jeremy Piven was the best choice for Buddy Aces, he was born to play the sleazy dirtbag. Common, Chris Pine, and Ben Affleck also have some terrific performances.
This film is very surprising and is full of plot twists, it's one of the better action movies of recent, but it is definately flawed.
