Review of Smokin' Aces (2006) by Richard H — 12 Aug 2010
A high octane, complex but ultimatley very silly movie where it's just a series of overlapping conversations before people start shooting each other. Utterly implausible but featuring a manic central performance from Piven and a decent turn by Garcia as softly spoken FBI director Locke.
Reynolds is good as the idealistic FBI agent opposite world weary partner Ray Liotta. There is a quick crazed turn from Jason Bateman as a seedy lawyer, Alicia Keyes is cute as hell as a hitwoman (but very convincing) and Ben Affleck does his usual thing as a bailbondsman. Pre Kirk Chris Pine shows up as a psyhco redneck and Matt Fox makes a quick appearence too.
A bit of a muddle and the ending is far from satisfying.
