Review of Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball (2010) by Ryan J — 02 Aug 2010
The original Smokin Aces was an underrated movie (in my opinion, of course) and I was afraid that the prequel would destroy any of the charms that the original brought and I am here to say that yes, it wasn't exactly The Godfather but it was an entertaining and worthy prequel to a great movie.
The plot seems a little nonsensical at times, but it is nonetheless intriguing and the twists are genuinely surprising and they keep you hooked until the ending which I thought was glorious (I was cheering).
The beginning of the film has a really slow pace and it felt as if the plot meandered around a lot with some boring and somewhat uninteresting characters, but by the end I kind of understood why the meandering took place.
This is not a perfect film (the aforementioned nonsensical plot, the boring main characters, bad pacing, some janky special effects), but it felt like a gift to the fans of the original and if you are like me and Smokin Aces has a special place in your heart then I would not think twice about giving it a watch knowing that it does not surpass the original.
