Review of Smoke Signals (1998) by Bonnie W — 29 Dec 2008
The movie is funny, touching, poignant, tragic, but not overly sentimental or heavy handed with message. Evan Adams and Adam Beach were both brilliant. In the last scene, Victor releases his father's ashes over the river, releasing in the process his grief, anger, disappointment, discontent, disconnection, and in the voiceover, we hear Thomas ask "How do we forgive our fathers?" It is one of the most compelling, stirring scenes I have ever experienced.
Smoke Signals is a story of odyssey, physical and emotional, of the cathartic nature of ritual and ceremony, and of forgiveness.
