Review of Smoke Signals (1998) by Walter M — 07 Aug 2008
I'd like to read the book this movie is based on because I think the book will be vastly better than the uneven film that was made from it. For those looking for a narrative-based film, you won't find it here.
This is a classic character study of two Native Americans on a road trip. However, I felt the characters were a bit cliche and the purpose of their trip simply didn't resonate emotionally as it was intended to be.
Adam Beach was put on the map because of this and other than his conventionally handsome appearance, I see no other reason why he was a big deal. His acting skills didn't impress and his character was your typical angry young man who's pissed at the world.
The other character was just as cliche - the Native American version of Urkel. There are some funny moments and it was nice to see a film about a group of people we don't normally see in this manner (in other words, an Indian movie thats not a Western or talks about the injustices they have endured in our history).
Despite this, the film was merely average to me and, at best, slightly above average.
