Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Brandon F — 10 Nov 2008
"Smiles of a Summer Night" is a classic example of Bergman's ability to captivate an audience. This film dives into the deviant nature of human sexuality, and then forces the watcher accept the characters' actions as the societal norm of the time, which it was not.
It takes the watcher into an uninhibited sexual environment which they believe should be making them feel uneasy, yet remain unsettlingly comfortable. It inspires the hope of finding love for all, independent of the situation.
Bergman uses many techniques to create this atmosphere, which makes this stunning film what it is.
