Review of Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) by Philip O — 16 Jan 2009
Extremely preachy, I found Ingmar Bergman's film "Smiles of a Summer Night" to be monotonous. The theme of the complications of love was so overdone. Ultimately, I felt the characters made no progress within the film and were used more as a showcase for Bergman to philosophize on life rather than to tell a convincing story.
Stylistically, I suppose it isn't terrible. The scenery, sets, and costumes are all very well detailed for a period film. "Smiles of a Summer Night" is also supposed to be a romantic comedy but I failed to find much humor in it.
While love is no simple subject to tackle, I think Bergman's choice to focus soley on it's complexities just left me bored.
