Review of Smashed (2012) by Kristal C — 11 Sep 2012
James Ponsoldt's Smashed follows Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Charlie (Aaron Paul), a couple that seems like a match made in heaven. They're a duo who enjoy the simple things in life, such as music, croquet and above all...drinking excessively. After the recent consequences of her alcohol abuse, Kate decides to go sober to turn her life around for the best. Naturally, that's much easier said than done.
Smashed is a wonderful little dramedy that satisfies with both its emotional resonance and sense of humor. Where the film really shines is in its performances. Winstead is stellar as the sobering Kate and brings a strong sense of innocence to her character. Despite her detestable actions in the first act of the film, we still manage to care for her throughout her journey towards sobriety. Although a little underused, Paul provides some great chemistry with Winstead. Through both the good and rough moments we experience with them, their relationship always feels genuine. I mean, it's Ramona Flowers and Jesse Pinkman, how freaking adorable is that?
The screenplay is another definite highlight; feeling both honest and engaging. Even though it might handle the recurring theme of alcoholism in a way that's little too on the nose, the film never lost me at any point. However, there was one subplot involving a "crush" that felt more like redundant filler than an essential asset to the story.
Overall, Smashed does an excellent job of providing both tears and laughter. Featuring a strong script and the performance of Mary Elizabeth Winstead's career, Smashed is well worth your time and money.
