Review of Smashed (2012) by Emma D — 20 Oct 2012
Tackling a weighty and well-worn issue such as alcoholism isn't easy. The topic alone is sensitive to anyone who has battled with addiction. Fortunately, director James Ponsoldt treats it with utmost respect and clarity without becoming too preachy and pedantic.
Rarely have I said that I enjoyed every moment of a movie but in this case, I did. The performances were extraordinary (particularly Winstead) who up until this point has been overlooked and typecast for starring in genre movies that never really tapped into her full potential.
Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul also showed quite a bit more range especially during the scenes involving just him and Winstead. Surprisingly, despite the bleak subject matter, there were many lighthearted and genuinely funny moments.
Octavia Spencer, who portrays Winstead's AA sponsor provided the film with a voice of reason while an awkward turn by Nick Offerman of Parks and Recreation fame rounded out a winning cast. Granted, this film is bound to hit too close to home for many people but if you are willing to give it a chance and put aside your own notions about addiction and what it takes to start anew, you won't be disappointed.
