Review of Smashed (2012) by Eytan D — 24 Mar 2013
Of course, the best movie about the trials of alcoholism will be "Days of Wine and Roses." However, "Smashed" is the first movie in a while to not drown its subject matter in heavy melodrama.
There is enough humor to balance out the sadness, and the movie is helped by the leading performances. Aaron Paul of "Breaking Bad" fame is great here, but the biggest surprise is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who displays exceptional skill and bravery in a role that is probably very hard to play.
She is making a successful transition from action and horror to cinema overall.
