Review of Smashed (2012) by Jake N — 30 Aug 2013
Randomly picked this to watch because it stars Aaron Paul aka Jesse Pinkman (the wait between Breaking Bad's final episodes is driving me crazy), and I heard it was good and depressing (been on a downer kick).
It did not disappoint. IMDB'd it afterwards and realized not only is it from the writer/director of the recently released in theaters The Spectacular Now (which I want to see badly now), it also stars an unrecognizable Mary Elizabeth Winstead aka Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs.
The World!!! Her performance in this movie is amazing. Aaron Paul and other supporting characters were also great. The only problem I have with this alcoholic getting sober story is that it's almost too realistic.
Meaning the fuck ups and consequences and getting fired and breaking up that go along with being an alcoholic are really depressing and then she's sober and doing ok, and then the movie ends. There's no real redemption or romantic reunion or any kind of happy ending.
It's just like real life, and that is truly depressing.
