Review of Smashed (2012) by Tatsuhito K — 16 Sep 2013
I was expecting to somewhat identify with this film (about alcoholism), because I lost my dad to the disease, and understand the complexities, stigma, and shame associated with it. I had a couple of cringe moments, but having been part of the chaos and pain, doing the crazy, dysfunctional dance (to a very effed-up rhythm!) .
.. the storyline left me feeling ... flat, expecting a lot more drama, on the level of what my family and I went through. I do hope, however, that when people see this film, there will be compassion, understanding, and empathy for Kate.
(THIS Kate has had a whole lot of pain, worthy of a gut-wrenching, heartbreaking film. My dad's story wasn't anywhere near as emotionally calm as the film characters', sadly.).
