Review of Smallfoot (2018) by John M — 16 Oct 2018
Think for yourself. So this is about a yeti (Channing Tatum) who lives in a village that is content in just keeping to themselves and believing what they believe. When he encounters a human for the first time, he naturally brings the news back to his village.
They are skeptical because of what the written rules state, so he must go about and prove that he was telling the truth. Now this wasn't something that I was initially sold on. I like all of the voice actors in this, but there was nothing in the trailers that made me want to run out and see it.
Once I heard a review that said that this was a critique on religion, it then it got both my curiosity and attention. While I will agree that this is present here, it still can't shake the feeling that this is a lower-tiered animated feature.
Not to get too puntastic on you, but this just feels like a smaller animated movie. While I have goodwill towards the entirety of voice actors featured in this, I have to admit that they aren't exactly what is considered to be A-list.
In fact, if this didn't have the interesting hook where it encourages its audience to not accept truths just because "I told you so," I would easily consider this to be mediocre. It does count for something, though; I can definitely see a few awkward conversations between parent and child happening because of this movie.
This isn't something I would consider to be a musical, but there are about a half dozen songs in this. They're okay, but nothing special. Common has the only number that is worthy of mentioning, but I suppose that is why he got cast in this movie.
I think Channing Tatum may actually have a future in voice acting if he gets cast in the right roles. All of the other voice actors are serviceable, but don't do anything noteworthy. This isn't going to be something that stands the test of time, and it will very likely be all but forgotten by the time the decade turns.
Most of the scenes play out like connected Looney Tunes sketches if that helps to paint a picture for you, and I feel that you should only watch this if you really want to.
