Review of Smallfoot (2018) by Jacob F — 12 Oct 2018

Now the "Monsters meets the humans" is a Concept that I thought I had enough of when I saw Hotel Transylvania 3. However, this film just made me change My mind.

With Disney being rather silent this year in animation, Hoping that Incredibles 2 would be enough to calm the masses, Smallfoot truely dominated as my favorite animated film this year. It has something for everyone and contains a strong message about accepting what is seen as true and looking beyond what can't be spoken.

The movie is also, Surprisingly consistent, where roaring is actually a form of communication and creatures like Bears can speak to Yetis, yet Goats and humans can't. Makes one wonder if the Goats and Yaks can also speak to one another.

The Human characters are also quite enjoyable, though since only 2 of them actually hold any importance to the story, they serve their purpose, where Percy and Brenda teach the Lesson of integrity.

However, one of the best things is the Soundtrack. The songs are REALLY good and show that you don't need constant rescores of the same song to serve the story. Which is a problem I feel Like Disney has. Frozen and Moana have the main song rescored 3 times in the movie. While Snallfoot has a different song that says something entirely different. And Common's "Let it Lie" is such a catching, yet honest song that really does capture the conflict and issue with Humans and Yeti.

Now it has it's flaws. The overall pace of the film is a bit too quick, (which I get, since kids have short attention spans) and the humor seems exclusive for kids. I didn't really laugh too much at this. However, considering the aimed audience, these flaws are rather minor.

Overall, it's a solid animated film. And my personal favorite animated film of 2018.
