Review of Smallfoot (2018) by Karen V — 13 Oct 2018
I decided I wanted to watch a fun, feel good film today. Pretty much everything on at the local theatre involved murders, war, or homelessness. Um, no. There was an animated film called "Smallfoot". I saw it had 4 stars, knew nothing more about it, but figured a kid's film with 4 stars couldn't be too bad, and was at least likely to have a happy ending.
In the words of Simon Cowell...
I didn't like it.
I LOVED it!
It's sort of a cross between Monsters Inc., Ice Age, and Wile E. Coyote. Very funny (never in the uncomfortable must laugh so it won't be so painful way), the comedic timing was impeccable, and both parents and kids got some good laughs. There is some singing, which can often make adults cringe. No cringing here, it was all fun!
And there was a surprise. Some thought provoking fairly adult social commentary. Done in a way the kids might pick up some morals, but without them being in your face. Interesting enough you saw all the adults perk up their ears as soon as it started. At first it was in an "uh oh, is this going to be suitable for my 5 year old" way. Then they started looking interested rather than worried. The kids were oblivious and just enjoying the show.
I haven't enjoyed a kids film this much since Shreck.
And I'm glad I saw it at the theatre. The animation was good enough it was well worth seeing on a big screen. I may go back and see it again before it moved to DVD. Then I'm going to buy the DVD!
