Review of Small Town Murder Songs (2010) by Nik B — 15 Jul 2011
A great Fargo-like investigation of a woman's murder in a small Canadian town. Like Fargo, the direction includes providing great scenery of a cold rural backdrop- this time in Menonite country. A religious air also blankets the crime story itself as the lead policeman in the community has just been baptized, and still struggles with what was obviously a violent past.
His past becomes an issue as his ex-love and her current beau become implicated in the murder. His struggle to protect his love while still doing the right thing for justice threatens to derail the entire investigation.
A great collection of actors is complimented by a fantastic soundtrack if folk murder ballads that are played over slo-mo dialogueless scenes.
