Review of Small Time Crooks (2000) by Pierre K — 02 Jul 2007
Though the film is a bit formulaic, Woody Allen carries enough charm to make Small Time Crooks a midly entertaining comedy. Ingenuity was cast aside after the first half of the first act, yet there is enough substance to hold the attention of anyone in the mood for a few chuckles.
I did find myself drifting as the film progressed when the ending was all but spelled out explicitly in dialogue that overstepped the round of subtlety. Foreshadowing? How about a premature read of the script! Not being too harsh the film is fun and has its moments.
The first half of the first act was brilliantly quaint and built up a classic that was followed by routinely forgettable pulp. One word...cute. Bring the family in, the kids too, this one drops the academia and goes for a barrel of family fun.
It's Woody Allen so it's not all bad, but when you build a legacy you will inevitably be bitten by your past.
