Review of Small Time Crooks (2000) by David F — 08 Feb 2009
Feh. I remember when Allen made funny films. This ain't one of 'em. The first act is terrible, lame jokes abound. Second half is better in a "My Fair Lady' kind of way. While set in the present, the dialog sounds like the old 30's screwball comedies he grew up with.
..I mean really, who says things like "Her choice of Rachmaninov was inspired, wasn't it?" In Woody's cultural name-dropping world, rich people do. Once again, his contempt for the lower classes reveals itself.
And Elaine May looked terribly out of place subbing the Diane Keaton role.
