Review of Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) by Michael O — 08 Apr 2010
It seems Alan Arkin is the indie coming of age story go to dad, granddad, whatever. Tamara Jenkins is one hell of a screenwriter. She made a movie, the kind we're familiar with in our experiences with movies but she makes it delicious and joyful and new.
Even though on a Sundance budget the movie can barely leave the tacky apartments, or much less visit a Beverly Hills school, it's the dialogue and great bits of character charm that convince you of the strange environment of low-rent Beverly Hills citizens.
It's weird to say but it's worth watching for the scenes with girls and their dildos; Jenkins turns these sequences into poetry.
