Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Trystan C — 23 Jul 2012
Movies thrill us for a number of reasons, but a lot of the time it comes down to simply depicting someone overcoming challenges and accomplishing something we may or may not have the strength to do were we thrust into the same situation. The situation in this movie? Trying to find the love of your life over a span of 10+ years, losing her repeatedly, and still having the strength to keep going in the second most populated country in the world. Of course, that's not all "Slumdog Millionaire" is about. It's also about the tough-love of two brothers, and the knowledge that life experience gives you that books could never. But ultimately it is a love story, and an honest one at that. No shmooz or emotional manipulation here. It's all in the actions.
I think this movie has come out at the right time as well. In a time where cynicism and despair regarding our financial world is at an all time high, this could give people hope that just about anyone can turn their fortune around, and beyond that, that maybe there are more important things than fortunes altogether.
