Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
So--it's this year's "Feel Good" Nomination. While it is certainly well-made, and has some VERY striking imagery--I can't help but rain on its parade. The cinematography and direction actually work AGAINST it as far as I'm concerned. You see, we get so caught up in how great it's shot and how tricky/fabulously Boyle uses the flashback that I never get to connect with the characters--which is what this movie hinges on.
Did I want that poor boy to do well? Yes.
Did I WANT to see them get together? Yes.
Did I really CARE that much? Nope.
I know this movie didn't work as intended because I didn't even get misty come resolution time--and I'm the guy that doesn't cry in real life, but is a sucker at the movies.
Well made, yep. CERTAINLY worth seeing. "Best Picture" material? Gosh no.
But, please--stay for the credits. :-).
