Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by James C — 10 Sep 2012

Four years after its release I have eventually got round to seeing this incredible film. You know how it is, when a film comes out and everyone raves about it and for some reason or other you just don't get round to seeing it? Well this is that kind of example. When Slumdog was released it caused a stir in the Hollywood community and the international community, sweeping the Oscars off the heavyweight contenders in 2009. This is a film that knocked Benjamin Button off his feet, that put the Dark Knight in the shadows. This silent hit took the world by surprise and by storm. And for some reason I did not see it then...but that has been amended.

This is by far one of the best films I have seen. It is pitch perfect on so many levels, from the script to the cinematography to the acting (the emotional angst at the fates of the Indian street children, to the relentless pursuit for love through impossible adversities) to the musical score that beats with the heartbeat of India, this is a truly visceral experience. I found myself fighting back tears at the fate and mutilation of the street children and found myself cheering for Jamal and his quest for tracking the one woman he loved and lost. Dev Patel, a virtual unknown at the time, shines as Jamal. He embodies the boy become man searching for his lost love and unraveling his tragic life story to bewildered police authorities who suspect him of cheating on the Indian 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?'.

It is through a life of impossible coincidences that have lead him to that moment. It is as if Jamal was destined to appear on the game-show, that life lead him to that moment:... and yet it is not the game-show that Jamal seeks.

Slumdog Millionaire is Danny Boyle's triumph (I have yet to see 127 Days though...). Boyle, a visionary director who made the groundbreaking and era defining 'Trainspotting' has made a film of such heart and beauty that it almost seems like we have seen the peak, and hopefully not end, of one of the greatest British film directors. I cannot give this film any more stars, but if I could I would.

Slumdog does not rely on big explosions and wild CGI. It does not rely on reconstructing a whole ship and then sinking it again. All Slumdog is, is heart. And in this day and age of heartless films and songs, the heart of Slumdog makes it shine. If you have not seen this film make the time. It is truly truly outstanding, and one to add to your shelf.

And it will make you see the world differently. Trust me.
