Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Grady S — 30 Dec 2012
An adaptation of Vikas Swarup's excellent book 'Q&A', this movie is a visually stunning insight into one boy's difficult childhood in the heart of India. I felt that Dev Patel lacked the charisma and range of expression to carry a movie of this scale, and his performance left me distinctly underwhelmed.
I also felt that there were parts of the world explored in 'Q&A' that Slumdog Millionaire missed, but I acknowledge one of the difficulties in adapting a book to a film of reasonable length is having to 'trim the fat' and rearrange some knots in some threads.
Overall this is an enjoyable film, a respectable effort on Danny Boyle's part, and although it doesn't live up to the hype, I'd recommend it.
