Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
Highly entertaining and beautiful. A stylized spin on Bollywood. Is it the greatest movie of the year? No. In fact with all its hype, it sort of underwhelmed. That's not to say I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.
Go see it. You will be entertained. But it's dark. Much darker than the inspirational trailer leads you to believe. The slums of India are not pretty. The movie is overall grim and cruel, but evolves into a fantasy crowd pleaser like no other.
It keeps its energy up with its lead actor Dev Patel who you can't help but root for in his conquest of life, love, and 20 million rubees. The soundtrack for the movie also helps drive the excitement and style, a Danny Boyle signature for sure.
See it for the music, direction, and ending. But don't go in expecting Princess Bride type fun. It's more Princess Bride meets Requiem For a Dream.
