Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Darryl M — 20 Mar 2014
There's a reason why this film is critically acclaimed. It's glamorous, tasteful, honest and brave. It highlights the beauty as much as the ugly of India in a way that scratches no one's back or pays the product placement. An accessible and ingenious plot line following Jamal's story of how he came to almost winning Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, we're given the opportunity to overhaul his childhood growing up in various areas of India. Although it went down incredibly well in the western market, this film doesn't bow down to the west's impressions of the east. It is cut throat in it's compliments and seductive in it's bloodshed, showing a far more rounded and definitive picture of India than we're normally given.
Another one of those films which is unfairly slated for doing too well with critics and viewers - sometimes, a good film, is a good film, people. 5 stars.
