Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Jaime R — 12 Oct 2014
A little underwhelmed considering its reputation. As touching as its emotion was -- and, of course, the clever narrative and Boyle's sparkling direction -- I was never quite sold enough on its heart.
Lagaan, by comparison -- a much more formulaic and cliched effort -- was stratospheric, rapturous, with humor that reminded me of The Magnificent Seven and heart that reminded me of Capra -- an easy joyous viewing at near four hours.
Enjoyable and sweet, but ultimately feeling a little too insubstantial to be worthy of its accolades. A.R. Rahman does make me feel like reconsidering, though, with his typical magic in "Jai Ho!".
