Review of Slumdog Millionaire (2008) by Taylor B — 29 Nov 2014
Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor): Its getting hot in here.
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel): Are you nervous?
Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor): [audience laughs] What? Am I nervous ? Its you whos in the hot seat, my friend!
Jamal Malik (Dev Patel): Yes, sorry.
More often than not, when a film is overly praised, normally it fails to click with me and/or I find it disappointingly overrated. The story was truly uniquely told and mind-boggling entertaining. I mean, who would have thought a film surrounding the television game show "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?" would make for one compelling film. The main character trio, no matter which age version, were wonderful- Dev Patel and Freida Pinto had undeniable on-screen chemistry, Madhur Mittal (the last "Salim") was an interesting villain and he played his character pretty well. The kids were equally superb too, but I really got a kick from watching Irrfan Khan, who played the police inspector. He is such a talented actor but not a household name, but may remember him from his bit part in "Spiderman" and "Life of Pi" (which was also another awesome film with a unique way of storytelling). Overall, this film was really good and the only complaint I have is all the circumstances were just too convenient. I mean, what are the odds Jamal would continuously run into Latika in his lifetime, especially in a country as hugely populous as India. But, if you can't suspend disbelief with films, when can you?
