If the movie criticizes the cast system in India, why choose a fair-skinned Indian for the leading role? The people who actually live in Indian slums are mostly of dark complexion. The movie tries to score by superimposing the possibility of the American dream onto the lowliest of the Indian population and then making it come true.

As such it is a movie about impossibilities. The dumb-luck of the protagonist rather underscores the barrier between the uneducated and schooled populace. Of course it is much more convincing then most of the output of the Bollywood machinery.

However the characteristic feature of good Bollywood movies besides their average three-hour length is the ability to completely transform the genre from one part to the next. What begins as a silly love-story comedy ends in serious heart-braking and tough drama.

A happy ending is never guaranteed, just as in real life.
