Review of Slow West (2015) by Alex H — 17 Jun 2015
If the Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson teamed up together to make a Western; "Slow West" would probably be the film that would come out. This oddball western is a tremendous first feature from writer/director John M.
Maclean who, despite some drops in pace here and there, serves up a delightful under-90-minute treat! Filled with, somewhat heavy handed, hilarious visual metaphors - Slow West has a sense of humour unlike any other film i've seen this year while still giving space for tragedy and heartbreak.
Kodi Smit-McPhee is a remarkably sensitive and sympathetic leading man who plays off Michael Fassbender's brutish character brilliantly. The centre framed still cinematography is very pretty and the 3/4 waltz like folk music accompanies the images perfectly.
While it's a somewhat simple story, Slow West is best enjoyed for the wit of the screenplay and the joy of watching someones original take on an old genre.
