Review of Slow West (2015) by John K — 10 Jun 2015
Your typical western has always been about moral fortitude. Slow West is about is about destiny, though it may not seem like it at first. True to it's name things are fairly slow going. Young Scottish immigrant, Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee), crosses paths with an outlaw played by Michael Fassbender while on a trek across the American Frontier (though I have a hunch it was filmed in New Zealand) to find his long lost love.
Together they brave the danger's of the wild west. They meet a few bizarre characters along the way, most of which seem strangely out of place. I feel like writer/director John M. Maclean must have binged watched films by the Coen Brother's and Jim Jarmusch before conjuring this tale.
Ben Mendelsohn is criminally underused as a gang leader named Payne, as is Rory McCann who was so great in Game Of Thrones as The Hound. This movie is really all about the ending, once the pieces come together and the morbid irony sets in there will be some reward in understanding the nature of the story.
