Review of Slither (2006) by James S — 28 May 2010
Another take on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers, aliens take over your body theme that is suitably gross and enjoyable.
A smart script goes a very long way in this kind of movie and Slither is well written with some good characters alongside the genre stalwarts and some impressively funny dialogue.
Michael Rooker, always good value in the bad guy role, is attacked by in intergalactic slug and begins a slow metamorphosis into, well, a slug as well as embarking on a routine of impregnation and cattle slaughter. It's down to local cop Nathan Fillion to put a stop to it.
As well as boasting a great script and good turns from Rooker and Fillion, Slither has some great creature effects too. The slugs are genuinely disgusting and some of it is near vomit inducing.....but in a funny way.
On the downside, Slither is a little predictable and doesn't really do anything with the genre that hasn't been seen before. It also lacks any genuine scares with most of played for laughs, which marks it out as being not quite as good as Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty. Also, Jenna Fisher is wasted in a very small, blink and you'll miss her, type role.
Coming off as a cross between Twin Peaks and a grotesque monster movie, Slither is a whole lot of fun in a kind of gross way.
