Review of Slither (2006) by Cheryl M — 07 Dec 2012
''I know that guy, he looks like a chipmunk.''.
''Your momma wasn't too proud when you came out neither, Wally.''.
A small town is taken over by an alien plague, turning residents into zombies and all forms of mutant monsters.
Nathan Fillion: Bill Pardy.
Don Thompson: Wally.
Elizabeth Banks: Starla Grant.
Slither is a clever, entertaining horror-comedy paying homage from cult low budget 'trashy' creature features to parodies of the genre. Plot is kept minimal to make way for a slew of typically cliché horror flick characters, a traditional small town location and some very tongue in cheek laugh-fests.
Nathan Fillion as Bill Pardy from Serenity + White Noise 2 and the TV shows such as Buffy & Firefly. Makes a good B-Movie hero.
Michael Rooker as the main villain who becomes the host infected guy is suitably disgusting.
The overall effect is a trip through the ever changing socially conscious horror canon, drawing ideas and paying respect to, in particular, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Romero's Living Dead trilogy, John Carpenter's The Thing and Cronenberg's 1975 debut Shivers and his body horror's of the 80's.
Although ideally aimed at true horror fans, there is plenty in here to keep more universal viewers entertained too, albeit ones with a penchant for gruesome effects.
Slither is fun, serious yet funny and recommended if you love Zombie/Gore Flicks.
