Review of Sling Blade (1996) by Samantha R — 14 Jan 2010
Billy Bob Thorton surprised the hell out of me with this role. I still can't see him in "Carl"... at all.
The movie moves a little slowly but they are after all in some podunk town (is that a slur? nahhh...) and all the characters are folksy and fit just perfect. It has some sad moments and possibly a scene or two that don't seem necessary (they could be removed altogether and the story would not suffer). John Ritter, Dwight Yoakam and Lucas Black all were very good. But Billy Bob vanishes into this characters skin. I can't believe that's the 'vial of blood with Angelina Jolie' dude. Doesn't seem possible.
It's not a feel-good film and you may want to take a swing at Yoakam while watching but it is interesting and I do find myself watching most of the film whenever it is on.
