Review of Sliding Doors (1998) by Steve M — 23 Sep 2008
The story is about a woman named Helen (Paltrow) who gets canned from her PR job and runs to catch the subway home. She misses it by a fraction of a second.
Then, things get really interesting as you watch time rewind a few seconds and then you see her MAKE the train. The movie goes on to show two different pathways - the path her life would take had she made that train...and the path her life would take had she missed it. It's fascinating to see just how differently ONE little incident can affect your entire life. Plots do not get any better than this!
The ending closes with both life stories about her character coming full circle and showing that fate always rules above all the "What If?" questions you may ask. Everything happens for a reason and life always leads you in exactly the direction it should. Since we can't do this with our own lives, it's fun to follow Helen through the what-if's of her life.
I hope they eventually remake this movie. I think it's a little too British for Americans so many of them turn their noses up at the British humor they don't understand...but seeing as how 'Sean of the Dead' (sp?), 'Bridget Jones Diary' etc. have since taken off...maybe fans will give this movie another shot. It's one of those movies you have to watch in a quiet room and really pay attention to. It deserves much more attention than it has gotten.
